Drive along the fringe of the Coromandel Coast to Mamallapuram (128 km roundtrip/1.5 hours drive one way), site of the 7th century port city of the Pallavas. Returning to Chennai in the afternoon, visit Dakshinachitra (closed Tuesdays/holidays), a unique cultural and architectural exposition on southern India.
Morning excursion to Kanchipuram (130 km roundtrip/1.5 hours drive each way), one of India’s seven sacred cities and centre for the production of Kanjeevaram silk. Return to Chennai in the afternoon.
Midday flight to Madurai. Evening tour of the iconic Meenakshi Temple and bazaars.

Drive further west today (145 km/4 hours), leaving the plains for the cool coffee, tea and spice growing highlands of the Western Ghats. Game viewing cruise in the afternoon.
Leaving Periyar this morning, descend gradually into the backwaters of rural Kerala (129 km/4 hours). Cruise through the backwaters all afternoon and stay overnight aboard an air-conditioned rice boat.
Disembark at Alleppey this morning and after a brief look around, drive north to Kochi (64 km/1.5 hours). Late afternoon harbour cruise, followed by a performance of Kalaripayattu, a martial art of Kerala.
Full day tour of this atmospheric and historic port city (note: Indo-Portuguese Museum closed Thursdays, Dutch Palace closed Fridays, Pardesi Synagogue closed Fridays/Saturdays).
