The Golden Triangle

7 Days

From busy bazaars of Old Delhi and Jaipur to the quirky tuk-tuks to peaceful temples and grand mosques, the Golden Triangle is a superbly varied introduction to the sights of India. This tour takes you to the country at its noisiest and most chaotic, however, there are chances its colourful exuberance will leave you wanting to return for more.

The Golden Triangle is a tour in North India that stretches between Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur, and is named for the almost-equilateral triangle that the three cities make when plotted on a map. Starting in the capital, Delhi, and taking in the states of Uttar Pradesh (Agra) and Rajasthan (Jaipur), it’s India’s most well-trodden tourist track.

DAY 4 | AGRA

A sunrise or daytime visit to the Taj Mahal. A tribute from an emperor to his departed wife, the result and the experience are ethereal. Across the river is the little known Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah. Built early 17th century in immaculate and exquisite proportions, its outstanding features are latticed marble screens, and pietra dura inlay, the first instance of the use of this technique at any Indian monument. Nearby is Mehtab Bagh, a recently excavated Mughal garden, perfect for viewing around sunset.

Meals: Breakfast

DAY 5 | AGRA/ FATEHPUR SIKRI/ JAIPUR

In the morning, journey west to Fatehpur Sikri (37 km/1 hour), site of another important Mughal capital. An elegant red sandstone edifice of gigantic proportions, Fatehpur Sikri was a complete city built in the mid-16th century by the great emperor Akbar to celebrate the birth of a son, and deserted barely two decades later due to apparent water shortages. After lunch at The Bagh, Bharatpur, continue to Jaipur (203 kms/ 4 hrs).

Meals: Breakfast in Agra

DAY 6 | JAIPUR

Leaving Amber, visit the well-restored Anokhi Haveli, home to the Museum of Hand Printing, a remarkable display of a private collection of hand crafted textiles. [Anokhi Haveli is closed on Mondays]. The afternoon is at leisure, with a vehicle at your disposal. End the day with a walk through the pulsating old city markets, particularly Johari Bazaar.
