GAME OF TRUST – THE DABBAWALAS
5000 Dabbawalas come to the rescue to 200,000 hungry Mumbaikars delivering them daily their hot home-cooked meal prepared by their wives! Three local train routes don’t make it any easier and Mumbai is longitudinally long! Given all that, their accuracy of delivery is impeccable! Dressed in white outfit and wearing the Gandhi Topi (cap) you will mostly always see them smiling.
The story of the Dabbawalas dates back almost 125 years back, when a Parsi banker apparently wanted to have home cooked food in office and gave this responsibility to the first ever Dabbawala! His friends and colleagues liked the idea and thus began the saga!
In Mumbai, the dabbawalas are no less than heros! How they do it? What is the secret ingredient to their commendable success? Well, this is something you will have to come to Mumbai to witness and learn. They have their own codes that have been appreciated and acknowledged by top business schools all over the world with a six-sigma certification! Several celebrities and public figures have taken an interest in the tour of the Dabbawalas including Richard Brandson and Prince Charles.
The tour of the Dabbawalas is no ordinary one, you will hear stories, make friends and learn a great deal about their life and culture. I am also told that one of the contributing factors to the success of the dabbawalas is the ‘trust’ that the house-wife and the dabbawalla share. It is this trust that makes them what they are – perfection.
