A journey through India's ancient past
10 Days
Arrive Mumbai today and drive east along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway
to Lonavla (121 km/3 hours) in the Western Ghats mountains.
A day trip to two nearby Buddhist sites of great sanctity and antiquity:
the Bhaja and Karla caves. Both date back to around the 2nd century BCE
and are important passages in the evolution of cave temple architecture,
underlined by extraordinary artistry.
Drive on to Aurangabad (286 km/6 hours), pausing en route at Ahmednagar,
established late in the 15th century by the Nizam Shahi dynasty, a constituent of
the Deccan Sultanate. Its remains include the impressive Ahmednagar Fort and
some noteworthy tombs.
CONNOISSEUR
Visit the Ellora Caves (68 km roundtrip/closed Tuesdays), a group of Buddhist,
Hindu and Jain temples carved between 500CE-1300CE. Among them, the Kailasanatha
temple is sublime, a freestanding structure carved from 200,000 tons of rock.
Aurangabad/Ajanta/Burhanpur
Depart early for Ajanta (102 km/2 hours, closed Mondays), one of India’s most ancient
art treasures. Eight centuries in the making from 200BCE, its superb frescoes tell the story
of the Buddha and life during times. Continue to Burhanpur (134 km/3 hours) and, time
permitting, take an exploratory tour of its old quarter.
(One night at Hotel Ambar)
A morning tour of this little-visited provincial town, known primarily for its Mughal era
forts, mosques, tombs and pavilions from the 17th century. In the afternoon, drive to Maheshwar (169 km/4 hours).
Set on the northern bank of the Narmada River, Maheshwar is an ancient pilgrimage town,
former seat of the Holkar dynasty and famed handloom weaving centre. The riverside
ghats and temples resonate with fervour and colour from dawn to dusk. Take an excursion
to Mandu (126 km roundtrip), the deserted 14th century city of the Malwa Sultans.
