Arrive in Chandigarh today, where accommodation is held from 12 noon. An orientation drive is arranged this afternoon through the city, its skyline dominated by the architectural legacy of Le Corbusier.
At leisure till the short transfer to Kalka for the midday train to Shimla (alt 2,130m), a five hour journey. The Kalka-Shimla mountain railway that rises from the dusty plains to the cool heights, through a series of tunnels and loops, is an absolute marvel of engineering. Stay two nights at Shimla, or at nearby Mashobra.
Two days to experience the “Queen of the Hills” of the Raj era. Walk The Mall to view its attractions, take excursions to nearby scenic and holy spots, or take optional guided walks in the environs of Shimla.
A day’s drive along the lower reaches of the Himalaya to Taragarh (alt 1000m, 255 km/6 hours).
The beautiful Kangra Valley resonates with spectacular scenery, tea plantations, orchards, villages, ancient and medieval temples, and monasteries. Guided nature walks are aplenty and an excursion can easily be made to McLeod Ganj (90 km round trip/1 hour drive each way) at Dharamsala, headquarters of His Holiness The Dalai Lama.
Travel by the Kangra Valley Railway, a breathtaking journey through the superb natural vistas of lower Himachal Pradesh. Disembark at Pathankot and drive south through the wheat bowl of Punjab to Amritsar (110 kms/2 hours), arriving there early evening.
Visit the sacred shrine during the morning and in the evening as the markets around it come alive. Also visit the Jallianwala Bagh and Wagah border for the ceremonial lowering of the flag.
